Scalping screens are equipment used in the aggregate, mining, and mineral processing industries. A scalping screen is a multi-deck screen that can sort and classify stone by size. They screen several different product grades, such as coarse, medium, fine, and ultra-fine. These machines are at the core of most construction and quarrying operations.
How Does a Screener Work?
Aggregate materials are generally crushed into smaller sizes and separated by screening equipment. The main component of the scalping equipment is the screen decks that are set into channels that run along guide rails. The crushed stone is loaded into the scalping screen hopper feeder. The aggregate material is conveyed from the hopper feeder onto the scalping screen top deck. The product travels down the scalper top deck passing through several screening decks to sort the material into desired sizes. The screen openings on each deck determine the spec’d rock class sizes that the operator wants as end products. As the aggregates move down the screen, larger rocks are “scalped off” by the top screen, while the finer rocks pass through the screening decks. Ultimately, receiving conveyors separate the sorted rocks into piles.
Different Applications for a Scalping Screener
Common scalping screen applications include recycling, aggregates, compost, topsoil, coal, construction and demolition waste. As scalping screener technology has improved, so have the applications for the machines. It has been used to sort sand and gravel from construction waste, sort crushed stone from aggregates, and break down iron ore into a form helpful in manufacturing steel.
There is different screener equipment available to accommodate any size stone or aggregate spec. These machines are evaluated by looking at the number of screening decks and the desired stone class sizes. Scalping screens most often have 2 or 3 screening decks. The number of screen decks and the screen opening sizes that a screener operator needs will depend on what is produced at the plant and purchased from outside suppliers.
